Fats and Fatty Acids

Fats are an essential part of our everyday diets and form many important components and structures in the body. Fatty acids are the building blocks for fats in the diet.

Fatty acids are split into three common classifications:

  • Saturated
  • Monounsaturated
  • Polyunsaturated

Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids are types of polyunsaturated fatty acids and are considered "essential" as they cannot be made in the body and must be obtained through a healthy, balanced diet.

Therefore Omega 3 and Omega 6 are usually referred to as Essential Fatty Acids or EFA for short.
